Silver Surfers

14th June 2019
Silver Surfers

We are very excited to launch our new Silver Surfers sessions at Marshland Hall!

According to statistics over 5 million over 65's are 'digitally deprived', meaning they have never used the internet. With so many services now online, many of these people could lose out on important benefits. So at the hall we have decided to do something about it and make the internet as accessible as possible to the older members of our community. We have a community laptop within the Tea Room and we would welcome anyone who has a need to come in and make use of it, and I will be here to assist you with anything you need to look up. Whether you want to learn the basics of using a computer, or have a specific task in mind, we will guide you through it. We have already helped a lovely couple who were house hunting in the area to find some more properties to look at while they were visiting, and also a lady who was about to move house and needed to source a man with a van!

Give me a call on 07722 830253 if you would like to book in for a session, or you can always come over if you see me in the Tea Room typing away.

Hope to see lots of Silver Surfers over the coming weeks.

Til next time,

Tracy x

June's Bingo Night

12th June 2019
June's Bingo Night

We had a lovely night at this month's bingo, albeit after a slightly shaky start when our bingo caller rang in poorly, and our numbers checker and ticket and raffle sellers couldn't make it! We were 4 ladies down with half an hour to start and it seemed as though I would be calling the numbers, checking them, as well as selling all bingo books and raffle tickets! The day was saved with Pete (one of our regular bingo-goers) who offered to be my caller for the night in exchange for a cup of tea and a slice of cake - sold! Our lovely books seller then turned up who was planning on making it after all, and then our raffle ticket seller also came along. The day was saved, and that only left me with the job of numbers checker to cover. It was a busy night as always but we had lots of lovely prizes and £80 in prize money to give away, as well as our usual raffle and our tombola - which sold out within half an hour. We raised over £320 for the hall too, so all in all it was a very successful night. Thanks to everyone that comes along each month to support the bingo, and to all of our volunteers, as we couldn't do it without you.

Til next time,

Tracy.

Work Experience

11th June 2019
Work Experience

We are pleased to launch our work experience programme at Marshland Hall, where you can come and gain some valuable experience in our Tea Room. For children under the age of 16 they will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian and both work as a pair in our Tea Room serving customers on a pre-arranged shift to suit. Children aged 16-18 can work alongside either a parent/guardian or one of our lovely volunteers. Adults aged 18 or over will initially be trained up alongside one of our volunteers, but can then work alone once trained. We welcome groups who want to work together on a shift too - the more the merrier, and it certainly gets busy enough for everyone!

All work experience is on a voluntary basis, but we provide full training (including Food Hygiene Certificate if requested), staff apron, and as much tea or coffee as you can drink!

Pop into the hall or give us a call to see what shifts we have available, we would love to have you on board!

A Busy June at Marshland Hall

A Busy June at Marshland Hall

Just as we are getting over the fun of April's Easter Egg Hunt and May's Craft Fun day we are now looking ahead to a very busy month of June and there is lot's going on at the hall this month. As I am writing this blog post it struck me that I have probably never introduced myself properly to you all. As you come to the blog to find out all of the latest news and goings-on here at Marshland Hall I think we should probably know each other a little better!

My name is Tracy and many of you may have seen me in and around the Tea Room since the end of last year. I do the occasional Tea Room shift and also help to arrange the events that we hold here. I was the lady giving out the Easter Egg Hunt Treasure maps, running around at bingo nights, and signing in kiddies for the craft day if that jogs your memory! You can also find me most days in the Tea Room on a laptop in the corner (writing this blog amongst other things). I love my job here and am always looking for new ideas for events - things you want to be involved in - so if you see me please pull up a chair for a chat!

So, for our June events we have the Farmers Market on later today, Family Bingo night next Monday 10th, our Musical Extravanganza of songs from film and theatre on Saturday 22nd, and then a fundraising bingo on Monday 24th supporting an expedition to Borneo. Kid's Craft and Activities Day

We had a fantastic craft day for the kids last month and raised over £300 for the hall! Over 100 children came through the doors and had a wonderful time with their parents taking part in lots of crafts and games. We had so many activities on offer: dressing up, lego, sewing, knitting, pom poms, jigsaw puzzles, soft play, colouring, play doh, felt fun, card making, jewellery making - so many things for everyone to enjoy. We look forward to running the event again during the Summer Holidays so keep an eye out for dates coming soon.
